Welcome to 200 Claremont Ave
Modern apartments set within the confines of the historical Wythe Elementary School. Located two blocks from the Chesapeake Bay, this setting offers convenient access to the interstate while living in the friendly and active Wythe neighborhood.
These units have high ceilings, lots of natural light. Stainless steel appliances fill the kitchen that include: an ice-maker, self-cleaning oven, washer and dryer. Granite counter tops accent the open kitchen. Every home is unique.
Award winning, Mark Turner Construction, completed the renovation and adaptive reuse of the historic Wythe Elementary School in April 2020. The project converted this National Register Art Deco–influenced building c. 1936, into 40 market-rate apartments. Exterior elements were renovated including repair of masonry and window lintels, new roofing and downspouts, and new window glazing. New sewer and fire lines were installed as well as expanded parking and landscaping.
On the interior, all non-original walls built in previous renovations through the years were removed to restore the original corridor layouts. Asbestos abatement was performed during the demolition phase. All new walls, ceilings, finishes, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and sprinklers were installed. The three-stop elevator was restored and upgraded. Historically significant elements were retained and restored, including classroom doors and hardware, chalkboards, terrazzo flooring, and stage proscenium with stained cherry veneer panels.
Wythe Elementary School was built in 1937 and closed in 2010. The 40-room apartment building showcases some hallmarks of the old school, including the entrance sign reading: "Enter to learn, leave to serve.” One of the unique features of Wythe Elementary School is the placement of the school mascot over each of the front doors. The Owl, a widely recognized symbol of wisdom, was chosen by the students.
The school was named for George Wythe, an esteemed colonial lawyer, a Virginia Colonial legislator, a mentor to young Thomas Jefferson, and signer of the Declaration of Independence.
Shown by appointment to well qualified buyers.
Financials available upon request.
